The market research industry has a fraud problem. Ask ten experts how bad it is, and you’ll get ten different answers ranging from 5% to 60%. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: they’re all correct.
The Same Problem, Wildly Different Numbers:
Walk into any industry conference or scroll through LinkedIn, and you’ll find passionate debates about fraud rates in market research. One analysis found that 40% of market research firms experienced fraud in 2024, with average losses of $25,000, while other sources place fraudulent survey responses between 5% and 60% depending on the industry.
The frustrating reality?
These aren’t competing claims about the same phenomenon. They’re measuring entirely different things and calling them all “fraud”.
The lack of a standard definition means every calculation is built on different assumptions, includes different components, and excludes different behaviors.
The Insights Association has attempted to provide clarity, defining fraud as “any deliberate attempt to deceive or manipulate research processes, respondents, data, or results, in order to achieve an outcome that misrepresents reality.” Their definition emphasizes intent: if the purpose is to cheat, deceive, or produce knowingly inaccurate research output, that constitutes fraud.
However, in our opinion, the market research industry doesn’t need just one definition.
How are we defining “fraud”?
To understand why the numbers vary so dramatically, we need to break down what might be included when someone calculates a fraud rate. Here are the key components:
1. Bot Traffic
Automated programs that complete surveys without human involvement. These range from simple scripts to sophisticated AI-powered bots that can mimic human response patterns. Research indicates that despite activating CAPTCHA systems, fraudulent bot responses persist because bots can now be programmed to bypass conventional data quality checks.
2. Duplicate Respondents
The same person taking a survey multiple times, often using different email addresses or devices. This includes professional survey takers who maintain multiple accounts to increase their earning potential.
Respondents who mask their true location to qualify for surveys restricted to specific geographic regions. Some argue this is clear fraud; others contend it’s a gray area, especially when the respondent otherwise provides genuine answers.
Respondents who select the same answer choice for every question in a grid or series. Sometimes this reflects genuine opinion uniformity, but often it indicates someone rushing through without engagement. The question: is this fraud or just poor-quality data?
Individuals who treat survey-taking as a full-time job, potentially completing dozens of surveys per day. They provide real answers, but their over-exposure may bias results. Are they fraudulent, or just highly engaged?
Moving Forward
The market research industry doesn’t need to pick a single fraud definition that everyone must use. Different stakeholders legitimately care about different aspects of data quality.
What we do need is transparency and specificity. When someone cites a fraud rate, they should clearly state:
- Which components are included in their definition
- How the rate is calculated (denominator and numerator)
- The context of the measurement (panel-level, study-level, industry-wide)
- The detection methods used
The goal isn’t to minimize the appearance of fraud by choosing a narrow definition, nor to maximize it by including every possible data quality issue. The goal is to be precise about what we’re measuring so we can have productive conversations about solutions.
Until we achieve that precision, the debate over whether fraud is 5% or 60% will continue. And both sides will keep being right.
